If there is anyone that could truly capture the essence and expression of New York through effortless fashion, it’s Donna Karan. The designer is continuing the brand’s 25th anniversary celebrations into the fall season with a mash up of old and new trends. The Fall 2014 collection has something for every urban woman living in a fast paced cosmopolitan city inspired by people on the street and the fresh spin they give to whatever they wear. DKNY’s signature ‘beauty meets utility’ theme is ever present, but with an eclectic and empowering new twist.
The captivating new collection is a collage of textures; sheers and lace, wool felts, longhaired shearlings, sequins, faux fur trims and a new addition of PVC slick as wet asphalt. It is chic and cool and above all, perfectly capturing the zillion sides of New Yorkers and their signature style. The fall line builds on this notion by pushing the boundaries of style and creating a juxtaposition between old school and new school, which is captured in their sweaters, quilted bombers, faux fur trimmed peacoats and reversible stadium coats, all of which are in varsity colors, creating a sense of urban team spirit.
The juxtaposition continues with the Fall 2014 collection also representing ‘classic gone cool’, with city high hats, platformed city creepers, oxfords or slick tubular boots and modern graphic bags. Drama meets warmth with blanket statements; capes, skirts and jackets that are equally as eye catching on their own as they are teamed together. Finally, ‘chic meets street’ with the line featuring sweats and sequins, lumberjacks with lace, flannel coats stripped in shearling and banker’s suits all for a mix of slick and sane. Proving that only Donna Karan has the imagination and ability to put things that you’d least expect to work together, actually working together.
The color scheme takes things back to basics, with blacks, grays, bullion, whites, dark navy’s, bordeaux and touches of electric pink, which when added to the Houndstooth and animal camouflage prints brings the collection to life, adding depth and personality to every piece. The multidimensional nature of the collection does exactly what it’s meant to; taking you from day into night, night into day. All of these pieces perfectly reflect the laid back but sophisticated quality that Donna Karan and her city are known for. Much like New York, DKNY is timeless and ever evolving, which begs the questions: Why commit to one expression when you can wear them all?
