COS’s Spring Summer 2018 collection was clearly designed with an eye on the future but a firm connection with the present and roots to the past. Instant modern classics! The use of tried and tested materials like cottons and silks and the inclusion of the much newer Tyvek is another nod to the influence of time.
The different materials create different textures, volumes and effects on the silhouette. The tone is futuristic and quiet drama. The misplacement of key elements in classic pieces make them surprising in a pleasing way.
The palette is influenced by nature, from pure untouched white to dark woody browns, it is interspersed with yellows, greens, blues and reds that have bean inspired from tones found in nature.
Unconventional elements in womens-wear translate into trench coats with soft shoulders, evolved proportions and tailored pieces with modified cuts and lengths. The novelty also lies in how the pieces are layered. Everything was designed to be modular and interchangeable. And it all comes together organically and effortlessly. Accessories and footwear seamlessly bring the look together.
The design aesthetic applies to menswear. The long-established bucket hat is longer. The crossover coat is neither single nor double breasted. Everything has been changed but still feels comfortingly familiar.
Childrenswear has also been re-imagined along the same lines but is more playful and functional to fit with their more curious and active lifestyles.
You would feel comfortable in any of these outfits in a boardroom or at the beach.
