There’s a particular kind of movie that makes you want to book a flight before the credits roll. Maybe it’s the unfamiliar streets, a long train journey, a table at a restaurant you’ve never heard of, or simply the feeling of being completely out of your element. These six films capture the thrill of travel in different ways, taking us across continents, cultures and landscapes while reminding us that sometimes the best journeys are the ones that change how we see the world, or ourselves.
1. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty
Walter Mitty spends most of his life daydreaming, until an unexpected adventure takes him from Greenland to Iceland and beyond. With sweeping landscapes, missed connections and the thrill of not knowing what comes next, the film captures that particular magic of travel: the moment you stop watching life from the sidelines and actually step into it.
2. Before Sunrise
Two strangers meet on a train in Europe and decide to spend one night walking around Vienna together. That’s essentially the entire premise, and somehow it feels like an entire journey. Before Sunrise is travel stripped of itineraries, landmarks and checklists, leaving only wandering, conversation and the strange intimacy of being somewhere you have never been before.
3. Lost in Translation
Tokyo becomes almost a character in Sofia Coppola’s quietly beautiful film about two Americans who find themselves far from home. Neon streets, hotel rooms, crowded bars and unfamiliar rituals create the particular feeling of being somewhere completely foreign, where even the smallest encounter can feel significant.
4. The Darjeeling Limited
Three brothers board a train across India in an attempt to reconnect with one another, but naturally, things do not go according to plan. Wes Anderson turns the journey into a colourful, eccentric meditation on family, grief and starting over. It is also a reminder that the best trips rarely unfold exactly as planned.
5. The Motorcycle Diaries
Before he became a revolutionary figure, Ernesto “Che” Guevara travelled across South America with his friend Alberto Granado on an old motorcycle. The journey takes them through Argentina, Chile, Peru and beyond, introducing them to landscapes, communities and realities far removed from their own. More than a road movie, it is a portrait of how seeing the world up close can change you.
6. The Talented Mr. Ripley
Italy has rarely looked more seductive than it does in this psychological thriller. From sun-drenched coastal towns to elegant villas and leisurely lunches, the film immerses you in a glamorous Mediterranean world while quietly reminding you that beautiful places can inspire complicated desires. Consider it the darker side of the travel fantasy.
