I am addicted to online window shopping. I often browse the websites with zero intention of buying anything at all. Designers are now creating their electronic spaces to be just as soothing and inviting as their brick and mortar stores. The user experience is so pleasing that I am guilty of spending hours on some of my favorite online retailers’ websites. But recently my e-shopping wishlist has become more extreme than normal.
Most days I will look at dainty jewelry and souped-up MacBook Pros, but with the lock down I am being drawn to a slightly different crowd of products. I am showing a lot of restraint at the moment, but I am really close to cracking. Here are some of the things that I really want but don’t necessarily need.
A Fancy Robe/Kimono
I will neither confirm nor deny that I am mostly lounging around in my PJs all day. Ok, I do try to put my jeans on, every couple of days, if only just to make sure I can still fit in them. But I think a nice kimono-style robe would be the perfect compromise. In my head, I would be pretending to be a princess-ninja-in-hiding, or something like that. I am thinking bright colors and bold patterns to keep me alert and waiting to pounce on imaginary foes because let’s get real, the only danger right now is falling asleep for the third time on the couch.
Candles
I am a candle person. I buy them and I use them, but I usually have a few stashed away. But now that I am spending so much time (ALL THE TIME) at home I am burning through them really quickly. I keep looking at aromatherapy candles online, especially ones that claim to help you relax. But unless I doused myself in lavender oil and set myself on fire, I don’t think a candle is going to lower my anxiety levels, but they do make me feel slightly better.
Cleaning Tools
And no I don’t mean disinfectant or bleach. Since I am homebound, I have been doing so much more housework than I normally do. I have rationalized the excessive vacuuming by convincing myself that it is the new workout. I am also surprised by the amount of dust that accumulates over the span of a single day. No matter how diligent I am about dusting or busting out my four-year-old vacuum cleaner I still end up finding more. Maybe I just need a new one? Maybe, just maybe I need a super expensive high-end one that is light and is also cordless. But then again, maybe I just need an old school broom so I can fight my angst by sweeping floors.
A Massage Chair
I wish that in my previous life (before Covid-19) I was the kind of person who got regular massages. But I wasn’t, and since that ship has since sailed, I am seriously considering one of those monstrosities that will give you a full body massage as you recline in front of Netflix for your 7th episode of whatever it is you are binge-watching.
A Gaming Chair
Ok, so I don’t really need a massage chair, but I absolutely do need a gaming chair. I am not even a gamer, but they are the perfect office/home chairs. They are comfortable and will engulf your body so your back is supported while you do the things you need to do whether it is battling zombies in World War Z on your PS4 or creating content on your laptop.
Neon clogs
Even I can’t tell you where these things are coming from! I like wooden clogs. They are functional and noisy and can double as personal protection in a pinch. And with summer almost here, I feel that neon clogs would be the perfect juxtaposition of old, new and completely irreverent. But since I have nowhere to go in them, maybe I should think of something else.
Soundproofing
I promise, this one is a real need! Living in an apartment means that you can hear everything your neighbors are up to. Privacy is dead! And so is my sleep cycle because I have been blessed by living next to a large family who never go to bed upset and make sure they air all their grievances at the end of the day. I understand that we’re all struggling, so instead of asking them to be quieter, I just want to soundproof my own little bubble of safety. I looked at those squishy things you can add to the walls, but I think some noise-cancelling headphones will do the trick too.
Wallpaper
It is home improvement time! How difficult could it possibly be to wallpaper the living room? I mean it is just glue and paper, right? We did that in Kindergarten and mom loved it, so we should be fine. I even chose the perfect pattern but after watching a bunch of DIY videos on YouTube, I decided to slowly walk away from this one.
Hair Dye
I experimented with the stuff as a teenager, so maybe a global pandemic is inducing the same level of angst in me that is compelling me to try giving myself a makeover. And there is the added benefit of knowing that even if I botch it up, no one is going to see me for a while. I started out thinking I should go blond, but right now, rainbow highlights are very tempting.
Oh well, it is a good thing I am not much of an impulse shopper.
