The Middle East has a vibrant and emerging art scene that is bursting at the seams with talented individuals seeking opportunities to be seen, and spaces to be creative. The only major challenge to this explosive growth is having the right patrons, mentors and supporters to the scene who can help artists and communities grow, evolve and get the exposure they need and deserve. The wonderful people at ASAR – Al Ruwayeh & Partners, are stepping up and being the change we want to see. They are passionate about the community they serve and are dedicated to being a positive contributor to the art and cultural scenes in Kuwait, Bahrain and the Gulf Region. As a leading corporate brand within the region, they have placed the responsibility upon themselves to invest in the world around them, to uplift and empower. ASAR believe that it is our humanity that unites us, and aren’t just talking the talk but walking the walk.
They have developed an annual initiative titled ASAR Art Arena. This project aims to shine a spotlight on a new artist every year. This is sure to bring valued attention to talented individuals who need a little extra nudge, a little extra space on the stage, and a little extra airtime. ASAR’s support for the Middle Eastern art community speaks of their commitment to diversity, passion for community, and the empowerment of the world in which we live beyond the office walls.
“We are proud to introduce the “ASAR Art Arena”; as an innovative corporate social responsibility initiative, it is specifically designed to celebrate and uplift emerging artists. Through this platform, we aim to ignite a spark of inspiration, spotlight raw talent, and foster a community where art thrives. At ASAR, we believe in the transformative power of where art and business collide and we are honoured to embark on this journey of discovery alongside the next generation of artistic pioneers. Proving that together as a people, we truly can – Go Further,” said Sam Habbas, Senior Partner at ASAR.
We agree that art and business make a formidable force that can only make the world we live in, a better place. To quote Kurkowski (2019) of Forbes “Together, the arts and the business world make an extraordinary team to build communities and help one another thrive.” After all, when you build up and beautify a city, you make it more attractive, not only to the eye, but to investors as well. This is good for the economy, investors, and people who live in the community.
ASAR intends to, on an annual basis, commission a new artist to produce original illustrations or artworks to communicate special dates and occasions throughout the year. These artworks will then belong to ASAR and will be used across all media channels to communicate specific brand messages. In addition, these pieces of art will be used to create the ASAR yearly corporate calendar which will be distributed within the firm and to all of the firms leading clients which it serves locally and internationally. An online gallery will also be created on the firm’s website for the viewing pleasure of those who spend time enjoying our online presence.
Philip Kambel was chosen as the inaugural artist for 2024. He was first spotted within the local social scene in and around Kuwait; always first in line to donate his time and talent to many local charitable causes. Philip Kamble, a self-taught artist, is constantly searching for and experimenting with new techniques to incorporate into his watercolor expertise and calligraphy. An expat, who was raised in Kuwait, Philip describes his work as spontaneous, visibly exciting, and greatly influenced by his surroundings, his travels and his love for music. He enjoys exploring multiple media, such as watercolors, pastels, inks, and oils. Philip regards himself as an avid, plein air painter.
He is a true community inspired artist who has been inspired by the following quote from Erica Cook: “I’m not interested in competing with anyone. I hope we all make it.” When asked about his thoughts on art inspiring a community, he stated: “I would like to see us all move forward together, hand in hand, be it science, art, literature or sports. Making a brighter and better future for generations to come, and create a valuable legacy in our time.”
Through this initiative ASAR not only strives to grow their own collection of original visual communication pieces, they strive to create a safe place for talented individuals to be seen, individuals who will add to and uplift the community, the economy and ultimately the regional business world.
