Dinner theatre used to be the prevail of the upper classes. You got out your diamonds and your best threads and went off to eat prawn cocktail in a margarita glass and listen to Dean Martin. Nothing wrong with that. But now, The Regency Hotel Kuwait is offering you an even more immersive experience with Banquet of Hoshena. There’s nothing virtual about this dinner, it’s all been curated beautifully to represent the story that you are being told by the sultry voiced narrator, the Queen of Hoshena, a mystical place that comes to life on your very table.
For each course you are given a card to explain what you are about to eat, matching it to where you are in the tale. There are props, some edible to support the experience, and others the like you will have never seen before, like the floating dish of amuse bouche where you can actually taste the earth through the clever use of porcini mushrooms and parmesan in the Autumn Arancini.
There are five acts during which you will experience five courses and as you delve into the dishes you understand even more greatly the stories of the characters and lands of Hoshena. This is such a delightful way to experience a physical dinner as theatre itself. It is intimate as there are only four guests per table and each of you notices something different going on at the same time. Trying to work out exactly what it is that each of you is tasting is also fun as all the dishes have multiple layers and flavor profiles.
The Regency Hotel Kuwait was the very first place in the world to host this concept, in collaboration with Nadine Beshir who conceived and produced Banquet of Hoshena, which is written by Richard Hurfurd. The characters are well developed, the Queen slays actually, is terribly smart and she knows her King is a little feckless although she loves him deeply. The fairies are mischievous, the lands beautiful and colorful when all is well.
You will experience the ups and downs of Hoshena but it’s one long happy event at the Banquet of Hoshena.
