When I first heard about Burger House, I thought, “Ugh, another burger joint?” Boy, was I in for a ridiculously superb and mouthwatering treat. As a self-proclaimed foodie who planned my honeymoon based on Michelin starred restaurants, I know what is globally good, so-so and utterly and spectacularly amazing.
Located in the up-and-coming Khaleejiya Tower in Sharq, Kuwait is the newly opened Burger House, the brainchild of Munich-born Chef Nico and his other half all the way from sunny Mexico, the appropriately-called Patty. After completing his studies at Germany’s prestigious Steigenberger Akademie, Chef Nico felt the urge to further his studies and specifically, focus his efforts in the kitchen, the ultimate place where he always found sanctuary for his limitless culinary creativity. In 2010, the young couple moved to Manhattan, New York where Chef Nico enrolled in the renowned French Culinary Institute while Patty studied restaurant management. After spending time in the United States, the twosome noticed how unhealthy fast food restaurants overwhelmed the possibility of enjoying healthy, wholesome and gourmet meals that featured the same main food – burgers. In September of 2011, the couple moved back to Germany with the idea of introducing high-end burgers to their hometown.
With a keenness on offering quality food, Chef Nico spent his time locating hormone and antibiotic free sustainable cows that were also free range. He spent entire days concocting his handmade sauces and sides, some of which are influenced by his wife and their love for spicy Mexican favorites including chipotle and freshly made guacamole. Chef Nico’s recipes are based on his own favorite things to eat such as the Caprese salad inspired Mozzarella Burger and, from his adoration for spicy food, the Chorizo Burger. While he is a certified Bavarian carnivore, Chef Nico was driven to create equally delicious vegetable-based burgers to please his vegetarian wife Patty. After cooking up a million and one vegetable patties, Chef Nico pleased his own Patty – and later on, thousands of customers – with the perfect falafel-based patty. The innovative chef has plans to introduce a vegan baked burger in the near future.
In January 2012, the couple opened the first Burger House in Munich. Today, there are seven Burger House restaurants across Germany and our very own Kuwait is the first international location.
Enter my inquisitiveness and more importantly, my hangry, rumbling stomach that must have been audible to the waitress seating us. “Which classic burger would you like?” the waitress asked, “The classic, double, triple or jumbo?” After reading rave reviews about the place on TripAdvisor, I chose the double plus the truffle burger which has – drum roll – real truffles instead of a sad drizzle of truffle oil. I also ordered the oh-so-fresh guacamole. Plus chili cheese fries and a side of onion rings. And a vanilla milkshake. And yes, I devoured it all and felt like queen of the world with my happy little belly and grateful taste buds which have never come across such quality, flavor-rich meat that has been grilled to wonderful tender perfection and a buttered, ever so soft bun that melts in your mouth. Chef Nico’s multicultural family is obvious in his eclectic menu that shows off a diverse array of burgers including the blue cheese bacon, chipotle, chorizo, camembert and other burgers that were more health-conscious including sliders, no carb, veggie burger and more.
“Would you care for dessert?” I did, and still do, care for dessert. I sat back in my red, cushioned booth and rested my fingertips on the cool wooden table, relishing the warm coziness of the diner-ish restaurant that featured black and white street photographs of international icons of every world. I turned my attention from the restaurant’s outdoor area that overlooked a lovely garden to the kitchen’s swinging door; I could see my dessert floating to where I was waiting. Soon, my absurdly delicious Nutella cheesecake was laid down before me, and out went every care I had in the world.
