When it comes to authentic Lebanese cuisine, everybody in Kuwait recommends Mais Alghanim. It has built a reputation of its own as one of the best Lebanese restaurants locally. With freshly cooked, delicious and genuine Middle Eastern food, there is just no comparison.
Mais Alghanim’s menu carries all traditional, popular Middle Eastern dishes, however from time to time, new promotional items and dishes requested by clients may be added. Almost every season, there is a new release, or a year-round favorite is added to the menu. This season, they just launched the Chef’s Mezzah special menu and it is definitely something you do not want to miss.
Although long-established, the restaurant keeps up with trends and market demands, the Chef’s Mezzah menu is inspired by client needs and includes many vegetarian options, and a small number of meat options. With that in mind, the regular mezzah favorites are always available to order from. Since most Middle Eastern food has earned itself a reputation in lacking to exclude meat from its food, this menu is definitely special. From salads, to cold and hot appetizers, options are varied but mostly suitable for the ones who prefer lighter, meat- less options.
A kale base with chopped tomatoes, onions and pomegranate is garnished with walnuts and drizzled with olive oil and lemon juice makes up a new delicious item called the Kale Tabouleh. Another option for green lovers, is the Beetroot Tahina Salad which has a citrusy kick and tahina sauce.
The cold appetizer options include two special plates, the Hindiba Bil Tahina and a Hummus Zaatar. The Hindiba dish is centered around the chicory greens with an exciting tahina flavor added. The Hummus Zaatar is really as simple as it sounds: Hummus, Thyme and Tomato Salsa centered in the plate. If you are a lover of zaatar, you will love this!
Other options include a delicious Potato Kibbeh with Veggies which is 100% vegetarian. The consistency is mushy and the flavor melts right into your mouth. The Harraq Osba’o, which is a very popular dish known to be irresistible, is now added to this menu. It includes lentils, pasta, coriander, tamarind, pomegranates, fried onion and fried bread layered in a well-presented dish. The Baba Ghanouj also got an upgrade in this menu: Ghanouj & Bakleh which is now basically the same old tasty Baba Ghanouj you can get from Mais Alghanim, but with Bakleh Salad (purslane) and pomegranates on top.
The hot appetizer options were full of mouthwatering platters such as the Skewered Chicken Liver and Quinoa Kibbeh. The Skewered Chicken Liver is a freshly made grilled chicken liver with grilled potatoes, bewaz (a salad mix of onions and crunchy greens, topped with sumac) and is served with a coriander garlic sauce. The Quinoa Kibbeh is quite distinctive and a definite must. Not only is it made with quinoa which is so different from the traditional kibbeh, it is stuffed also with eggplant, onion and pomegranate, and plated on a sumac labneh base. You will not believe that there is no meat in this kibbeh!
Three dishes served in skillets are the Cauliflower Kozbarieh, Shrimp Beirutieh and the Falafel Tajen. The Cauliflower Kozbarieh is a mix of cauliflower, coriander, garlic and lemon Juice served on a skillet while the Shrimp Beirutieh is the Beiruti take on an appetizing shrimp dish that’s sautéed with tomato harra sauce and garnished with coriander as well. The Falafel Tajen is a bright dish which contains falafel, tahina tajen sauce, with parsley, tomato, turnip pickles and sesame seeds.
If those additions are still not enough, you have these noteworthy desserts to try. Leave room for them because you will not want to leave without trying these either. The two desserts are called Apple Crack Pie and Auntie Salma’s Cake. The Apple Crack Pie is like a buttery apple pie with a thick crust while the Auntie Salma’s Cake is almost like an Arabic version of the cheesecake.
