We are always reminded of our circulatory, nervous and muscular systems in our body. But did you know that we have 13 different systems in our body?
They all carry out different interrelated chores by the second, and our bodies have their own way of ‘throwing out the garbage.’ By disposing waste products and debris of cells together with bacteria and protein, we have a healthy immune system. One system in particular, the lymphatic system, is part of the circulatory system and it is a vital part of the immune system.
The lymphatic system consists of lymphatic organs which include: tonsils, thymus gland, spleen, lymph nodes, and lymphatic vessels. The main functions of the lymphatic system are:
1-Removal of interstitial fluid from the tissues.
2-Absorption and transportation of fatty acids and fats from the digestive system.
3-Transportation of white blood cells and nutrients to and from the lymph nodes into the bones.
Therefore, the lymphatic system is responsible for disposing pathogens, microbes, and other immune elicitors. By maintaining a strong immune system, our bodies will be strong enough to even combat life-threatening diseases such as cancer, asthma, arthritis and heart disease.
Apart from an anti-inflammation diet, which I have previously discussed in bazaar Magazine, here are some lifesaving anti-inflammatory tips you can implement in your daily life for a strong, healthy immune system:
1-Bouncing: Yes, jumping on the trampoline has amazing health benefits. Have you ever wondered why children enjoy jumping on the bed? It is because they are “cleaning” out their lymphatic system unconsciously. Bouncing works very well for moving lymph. Each time you bounce, you directly increase the gravitational pull on your lymph. Bouncing is also an exercise that reduces body fat, firms your body especially your hips and legs, and improves your balance. Bouncing is easy on the joints so people of all ages can bounce safely and happily. Try bouncing at least 3 times a week for 15 minutes. Decathlon, located in Marina mall, sells good quality trampolines.
2-Dry skin brushing: A dry brush can be found at The Body Shop, and it’s a necessity for every individual. Dry brushing promotes lymphatic drainage of toxic waste, which in turn, increases ones immunity, reduce cellulite and have healthy glowing skin. Always brush toward your heart; meaning: Start from your feet and work your way up.
3-Walking: Move around whenever you can. Your lymphatic system is part of the circulatory system, so go for a walk during lunch, stretch throughout the day, and develop a daily exercise schedule. Walking creates a gravitational pull on the lymphatic system; therefore cleaning out buildup waste more efficiently.
4-Get a lymph massage. Ever wondered why you are suffering from head congestion, stuffiness, feeling of pressure on head or ears, dizziness or even insomnia? It is because you may have a lot of stored lymphatic fluid in the head which might contribute to internal swelling. A lymphatic massage helps in regenerating tissues and cells, and detoxifying the body.
5- Sauna: To supercharge your lymphatic drainage, it is highly recommended to get into a sauna twice a week after a workout. The heat increases your heart rate and encourages deep breathing by activating circulation and in return sweating and excretion of toxins will be encouraged. Please consult with your doctor or health specialist if it is safe for you to use the sauna.
6-Comfortable clothing: Cotton, silk, wool, linen are natural fibers that are safe to wear. Synthetic clothing (such as polyester) are absorbed through the skin and taken up by the lymphatic system and added to the body’s toxic flow.
7-Cosmetics and skin care products: Your skin is the largest organ of elimination and absorption. Avoid products that include synthetic preservatives, foaming agents, and fragrances. Invest in organic skin and hair care, preferably plant based because they will be processed by your lymph.
8-Breathe. The breathing we do 24/7 is a lymphatic pump by our heart. Proper breathing is the most important facilitator of the lymphatic system. Long deep breaths are advised to have clear, uncongested lymph. Herbal teas such as olive leaf tea, ginger tea and fenugreek also affect the lymph positively.
When the lymph is working properly in one’s body; the body is full of vitality, the complexion glows and if you do become ill, you have the above tools to help regain your health.
