The topic of sustainability is an important and inescapable one today. With climate change and pollution on the rise, finding ways to work together as a community that includes our favorite brands towards a greener future, a better quality of life and protecting our ecosystem is imperative. Brands that are serious about making change, take a more holistic approach to sustainability because they need to rethink everything from manufacturing to customer service. And we’ve noticed that Costa Coffee, have been doing just that and living their own motto; “respecting the planet at every step”. At Costa Coffee sustainability is seen as a continuous journey where the brand strives to have positive impact on the environment and involving the community along the way.
As part of Costa Coffee’s sustainability journey to look after the world we live in, 100% of the coffee beans used at Costa Coffee stores are sourced from The Rainforest Alliance certified farms. This means that every cup served is an investment towards coffee growing communities to improve farmers’ livelihoods and protect the environment.
Their sustainability efforts don’t stop there, they’ve launched “Grounds for Ground” an initiative where customers can ask for ground coffee that is given out in stores for free which can be used in multiple ways both personal and environmental such as planting or face masks. In May, Costa Coffee collaborated with Washingtonia, in an event that took place on May 21 in Dar Al-Athar Al-Islamiya (DAI) for the Art & Eco-friendly Bazaar during International Museum Day. They gathered 80 kilograms of used coffee grounds from their stores which were then used to plant over 400 plants and taught their customers how they can use ground coffee sustainably. This is just one of the ways Costa Coffee is diverting waste from landfills whilst giving back to our community.
Costa Coffee also makes sure to always involve the community in taking even the smallest steps towards sustainability and taking care of our planet with their monthly beach clean ups. Employees and community members join to raise environmental awareness, collecting litter using biodegradable bags. A total of 466 trash bags of waste and plastic were collected in 2021. Sustainability is strongly rooted in Costa Coffee’s practices as they make it a point to evolve the community with simple steps such as purchasing coffee! As Costa strives to encourage reducing plastic waste they’ve also launched “B.Y.O.C – Bring Your Own Cup” an initiative, where customers can bring their own cups and get 15% off their coffee orders. This initiative has helped saved 215475g CO2 emission in Kuwait by reducing the use of less disposable cups.
Costa Coffee’s effort to making a positive change is clear as they continue to break new grounds in promoting sustainability and involving the community for change towards a better future for our planet.
