At the end of every year, Deliveroo Kuwait releases its annual list of the most popular food items of the year and casts its predictions for upcoming food trends in the region. It is fun looking back on the year through a different lens. Across all Deliveroo markets, cheeseburgers have taken over globally, scoring the top spot on the list.
Beloved burger chain Five Guys dominated the charts not only in Kuwait, but across the world, with their Cheeseburger as the most ordered food item globally, and the second most ordered product in Kuwait.
EXCLUSIVE PARTNERS WIN BIG
Multiple dishes from restaurants and cafes that customers can find exclusively on Deliveroo Kuwait make Deliveroo’s global top 25 list. Deliveroo has proven to partners that it pays to be exclusive. Earlier this year, Deliveroo Kuwait added Starbucks to its growing list of exclusive restaurant partners. Customers enjoyed their favorite coffees from the global coffeehouse, with Starbucks’ White Mocha as the most ordered item in Kuwait, and the third most ordered item across Deliveroo’s 12 markets.
Other restaurant partners that customers can find exclusively on Deliveroo also made Deliveroo’s global top 100 list, including Swikhat Al Muharraq, Five Guys and Meme’s Curry.
ENJOYING THE MOVIES… AT HOME
Although movie theaters have been closed since March as part of national efforts to curb the spread of the coronavirus pandemic, that hasn’t stopped customers from enjoying their favorite movie-style nachos at home, complete with cheese sauce, salsa, and spicy jalapenos. This year, Cinescape’s Nachos was the fourth most ordered food item in the Kuwaiti market.
Other Kuwaiti favorites on the regional list include:
1 White Mocha – Starbucks | 6 Meme’s Special – Meme’s Curry |
2 Cheeseburger – Five Guys | 7 Lime Tikka – Swikhat Al Muharraq |
3 Original Yo – PICK | 8 Wacha Burger – Wachamean |
4 Nachos – Cinescape | 9 Chicken Royale Meal – Burger King |
5 Shack Burger – Shake Shack | 10 Build Your Own Bowl – The Bowl |
Based on this year’s results, the food delivery platform also shared key food trends for the upcoming year.
BUILD YOUR OWN
With more restaurant partners adding options for people to customize their food items, it’s no surprise that “Build Your Own Bowl” from The Bowl, customizable Poke Bowls from JOA, and the “Create Your Own” option from Slice were among the most ordered dishes in Kuwait. As customers increasingly enjoy creating new favorite food combinations and experimenting with new flavors, this trend is poised to do well in the upcoming year.
CUCKOO FOR CHICKEN
Whether it’s fried, grilled or baked, one thing’s clear: people love chicken! Globally, a poultry- based sandwich from Sydney, Australia took the fourth spot on this year›s list. Locally, chicken- based items from Swikhat Al Muharraq, Burger King, Beak, and Raising Cane’s were among Kuwait’s top ordered dishes.
VEGAN VIBES
Deliveroo has yet again seen a huge increase in demand for vegan food in the last twelve months, with orders of plant-based dishes up 115% compared to the previous year proving veganism isn’t just another here-today and gone-tomorrow food trend, and indicating this is a strong consumer favorite and an area of potential growth for the platform. The number of restaurants that offer vegan menus has more than doubled within the last year, as a reflection of demand from those that have committed to this lifestyle. In Kuwait, vegan, vegetarian, and “flexitarian” restaurant OVO’s “Kale Tabbouleh Salad” was this year’s most ordered vegetarian dish.
