As part of Deliveroo Kuwait’s ongoing initiative to support local businesses, the delivery platform is encouraging customers to order their favorite coffees, meals and groceries from their most beloved local brands, under the campaign #LoveYourLocal. With many of us looking to get our diets and lifestyles back on track after Ramadan, Deliveroo is highlighting local vegan and vegetarian options that customers can enjoy.
This month, Deliveroo is featuring OVO and Wilgrow, two local-grown favorites that can be found exclusively on Deliveroo Kuwait. Founded in 2016, OVO is beloved by both vegetarians and meat-lovers in Kuwait, having quickly set itself apart in the local vegetarian scene with unique dishes bursting with color, texture, and taste. Founded in 2019, Wilgrow offers a variety of delicious vegan dishes and unique, plant-based meal programs for customers.
Deliveroo has seen a huge increase in demand for vegan food in the past year, with worldwide orders of plant-based dishes up 115% in 2020 compared to the previous year. In addition, the number of restaurant partners that offer vegan menus more than doubled in 2020, indicating both a consumer trend that is here to stay and higher demand from local vegetarians. Over the past year, Deliveroo has also seen a whopping 89% increase in restaurants offering vegan options worldwide.
“Deliveroo Kuwait is proud to be among the market leaders who are making it that much easier to support local businesses that are at the forefront of emerging food trends both locally and worldwide,” says Seham AlHusaini, General Manager of Deliveroo Kuwait. “This month, we’re excited to focus on the vegan and vegetarian scene, highlighting two of our favorite local options, OVO and Wilgrow. At Deliveroo, we are excited to be the exclusive delivery partner of these homegrown favorites, and we look forward to continuing to support the local restaurant, coffee, and groceries industry.”
OVO is a “vegan, vegetarian, and flexitarian” restaurant, offering a wide array of unique vegan and vegetarian dishes, while also catering to customers who enjoy eating the occasional meat, chicken or fish. While developing its menu, OVO’s founder, Amal Chahine, adopted a vegan diet for four months as a way to ensure every menu item felt complete in and of itself, with each dish telling its own unique story.
“I love tradition with a twist,” continues Chahine. “Behind every dish is a tale of civilization and history, and at OVO, every dish also incorporates something special and unexpected.”
A prime example is OVO’s Kale Tabbouleh salad, one of the restaurant’s most popular vegetarian dishes. While tabbouleh is traditionally made using parsley, OVO’s is also prepared using kale and topped with pomegranates and goat cheese for added texture and flavor. Chahine also created her version of a rummaniya, an eggplant-lentil dish native to our region and traditionally enjoyed warm and with flatbread. OVO’s recipe can not only be enjoyed cold, but is also served with fresh sourdough to add a modern (and delicious!) touch.
Located in Al-Dhai complex, Wilgrow prides itself on making healthy, clean food taste delicious. Wilgrow’s co-founder, Salman AlSabah, points out that vegan food is not only trending locally, but also internationally, with larger restaurant chains also starting to incorporate vegan options into their menus. One of Wilgrow’s best-sellers is their Shawarma Wrap, a protein-packed gluten-free coconut wrap with marinated soy meat.
“Vegan food is not just for vegans! It’s not only fruits and vegetables that vegans have to choose from; there is so much you can do with whole grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds —the options are endless,” says AlSabah. “All you need is an open mind and the willingness to try.”
As one of the few completely plant-based restaurants in Kuwait, Wilgrow’s dishes are also gluten-free and all-natural. The vegan restaurant specializes in making most of their ingredients from scratch — from their nut cheeses and mylks, to their breads, sauces, and more.
