Some of our own have been turned away from supermarkets for not wearing a face mask. We’re not sure if this is a decree, but we appreciate their extra vigilance despite the inconvenience. Scientific evidence is varied and sometimes contradictory regarding the efficacy of mask use. And even big organizations like the CDC and WHO have different recommendations. But we think that even if they are not that useful at all, if we are all wearing them, it is a constant and very visible reminder to social distance, wash our hands and generally be very careful.
You definitely should not be buying medical grade and surgical masks, unless you use them for work. What you can do is quickly whip one up using materials and tools you already have at home.
Please note that wearing a face mask doesn’t mean you can ignore social distancing rules. You still need to wash your hands after you have been out. And you need to wash it after every use, so use fabric that can take a beating in the washing machine. Your silk Hermès scarves should not be used for this.

If you have a bandana or a cotton square napkin this literally takes minutes!
Use an old t-shirt to make a mask that fits your face.
Or use a sock, but remember to wash it first!
This one requires some hand sewing, but it is still easy enough to make quickly.
This isn’t a fashion competition nor should you overly complicate. Find the easiest and quickest mask you can make and keep yourself, your family and our community safe. If anything, the COVID-19 crisis has shown us that the sooner we act like a community that cares and tends for all of its members, the faster and easier it is to overcome adversity.
