Ahmad and Noura, a happily married pair of bloggers, consider their story to resemble that of the fish and the bird. The bird fell in love with the fish, yet their existence as two entirely different species makes it impossible for them to survive. The bird gave the fish wings. The fish can now fly. Noura laughs, offering the plea of reason, “I know, a far-fetched example! However I guess it is because we are extremely different, we decided that blogging together would be our tool of self-expression. I love doing this together.” Far from the typical love story, they couldn’t be any different. One digital roof houses both the artistic reflections of the lunar eclipse, and an excited post about the approaching opening of the Hello Kitty café and restaurant. In logical terms, that alone would constitute an unsuitable match. Noura loves her fashion posts, her obsession with Hello Kitty, and everything dainty and delicious. She takes her time in developing a deep relationship with other female bloggeristas, listing them as ‘Her friends’ on her special blog-roll. Ahmad, on the other hand, is an avid social media fanatic; looking to share his passion for the digital forum with the person he loves. He is fully invested in writing interesting and satirical social commentaries, highlighting his varied interests, and creating a conversation amongst his peers. Were it not for Ahmad, Noura would have never ventured into the blogging scene.
Women and men’s interests are universal, and they shouldn’t be any different because one couple in Kuwait chose to showcase their journey online. The notion of ‘Women are from Venus and men are from Mars’ is embraced, rather than argued. At least, that’s what it looks like on the outside, before you realize that Ahmad and Noura actually comically compete against each other in managing their blog. Their candid relationship is transparent in their posting style, where they race for which post garners the most comments, whose tweets are the funniest, and whose tweets get retweeted more. They openly poke fun at the idea of a typical marriage, and they would rather be who they are. Noura states, “I’ll leave the blog for one week and see what he does, and he does the same.” Ahmad laughingly responds, “I’m pretty much winning at everything now!”
Although this may worry both relationship coaches and overly protective mothers who believe that the blatant transparency of the Internet is evil, His&Hers actually offers a rare and strategic platform for both the male and female opinion. Behind the humor lies a strong strategy that appeals to retailers interested in these desired segments. People respond to the honest commentary and the fresh insight on the life of a young Kuwaiti couple that aren’t worried about what people might think.
“People ask us why we are still sharing a twitter account, and the reason why is that we need to define to society that it is important for both opinions to count.” A self-established blogger for seven years, Ahmad shares a recent post recounting the changing nature of blogging in Kuwait. ‘His’ reflects that blogs nowadays are a source of news and entertainment, whereas years ago blogs were a creative outlet for free thinkers.
His&Hers have plenty in store for the future, the happy couple are expecting their first child in September. Perhaps a new inclusion to the comical sketch would be a new baby, where a new opinion would have its place in the digital arena.
