This season, H&M have found inspiration in a very unexpected place. Fans of the cult-classic, Twin Peaks, will notice the nod to the dream logic aesthetic in the 2018 Autumn/Winter Studio collection.
It is an interesting choice, since the nineties series that takes place in 1989 has a strong classic Americana vibe to it and fits comfortably with the aesthetic of this neo-noir inspired collection.
But H&M have taken all of the elements and turned them into amazing possibilities. Individual pieces from the collection easily move from feminine to masculine. Yet, it all blends together nicely. It is easy to transform yourself from a fifties movie icon or a lumberjack, without ever missing a beat.
Pair a sculpted wool dress with a cropped wool cardigan, and wear both under the nipped-in coated cotton trench coat and you are the perfect mid-century lady. Or channel your inner lumberjack with the must-have indigo precision denim jacket and sturdy turn-up jeans, a jersey turtleneck lingering underneath.
You could also choose to live out your 80’s dreams in the neon pop of a fuchsia-red feminine pleated skirt, set against the subversive wood grain print on a grungy viscose-silk suit.
Pernilla Wohlfahrt, H&M’s Design Director is pleased with the collections duality and direction, says
With H&M Studio, we love the play between the feminine and masculine and this year we added a 50’s twist – there are ultra-feminine options combined with mannish details and super-classic pieces that invite you to create your own distinctive look
You no longer have to stick to one side of the gendered fashion spectrum anymore. Use layers and accessories to add a masculine or feminine edge to an otherwise one-sided outfit. Pair squaretoed boots with preppy cardigans. Or wear a hard-edged biker jackets over bow-tied blouses. Outerwear and jackets remain true to the collection’s commitment to the new-noir style.
The ribbed funnel neck collar leather biker jacket is going to be our next favorite jacket that completes for when we are being punks. But that doesn’t mean we won’t also get the navy double-breasted wool pea coat and be extra chic. We are also definitely going for the mini trench coat, with its nipped-in silhouette, because who doesn’t need a trench coat?
There is no need to shy away from the bolder, more stylized H&M Studio pieces, they are meant to be mixed and matched for an urban modern feel. The cooler months can’t come soon enough.
