At this point in time, we’re well on our way to phase 2 of Kuwait’s ‘return to life’ plan. Still, we know that beauty salons belong in the very distant future of phase 5. And given that, like so many people, I’m supposed to be going back to the office soon I can’t hide the hack job I did to my nails much longer. I was this close to attacking my split ends with a very blunt pair of scissors last week. So I rummaged through my drawers, looking for my nail kit and a hair mask, only to find so many things missing.
If I’m walking away with anything of substance from this lockdown, it’s that we’ve embraced many new DIY skills. From home renovations, indoor gardening to kitchen adventures, at-home beauty, and self-maintenance is no different. We undermine the importance of self-maintenance, and how that when you sometimes focus on the outside, this leads to self-care too, making you feel really good on the inside. It’s a deeply personal experience when you think about it. Some of us (what also feels like everyone but myself) are getting better at self-maintenance. I’ve always been a low-at-home self-maintenance person. I wash my hair and let it air dry, I barely wear makeup, but I do love my indulgent spa sessions. Morrocan hammams at Six Senses Spa and Hydrafacials at Silkor were my jam. And I lived for foot treatments at Finesse Nail Lounge.
Like many people, I focused more on self-care during the full curfew. I zoomed with friends for gossip sessions, and I’m always Facetiming with my mom who’s been stuck outside of Kuwait since the end of February. I’ve also been making lots of banana bread and cookies and I’m only saying this because I won’t sit and lie about all of my pretend-accomplishments during lockdown. I’m grateful I’ve made it this far. And, if you’re not practicing any self-care rituals, then maybe starting with some self-maintenance is a good segway to self-care. Because just like we learned from locking down the country to flatten the curve, it’s definitely better late than never. Mix some oatmeal, cinnamon, and honey and make your own facemask. Whip out that fancy organic soap you’ve been saving. Go for it.
Eager to jump on the at-home beauty train, I started watching YouTube videos and began exploring the Instafeeds and stories of all of our amazing local beauty purveyors. One thing I noticed is that so many are doing at-home, easy-to-use beauty kits and many are sharing advice on their feeds too. More importantly, a lot of these local businesses are owned by women. So in my books, women supporting women is a win-win situation.
After rallying our team of editors and scouring the internet, here’s a round-up of beauty salons delivering dedicated at-home kits, as well as other incredible local beauty sources delivering your favorite brands.
