It is not a typo! Hygge is Danish for cozy. It is pronounced hoo-ghah. It is the feeling of coziness, whether alone or with others, at home or outdoors. It is being present and finding warmth and connection in the ritual of living.
For Danes, it is a way of life. Using their favorite mug for tea and wearing their comfiest pants, surrounded with loved ones in front of a fireplace. And while we all know what the concept is and probably aspire to it, we forget to live that way.
That’s why Ramadan is the perfect time to get your hygge on. Iftars, ghabqas, suhours and gatherings with friends and family. And we think the Danes have a great solution for that too. The Danish home store brand JYSK (pronounced yoosk) is your one-stop shop for transforming your home into a very cozy environment. The relative new-comer to Kuwait has more than twenty-five hundred branches in fifty countries. There is one in every neighborhood in Europe.
JYSK is trendy, affordable but does not compromise on quality. Don’t take my word for it. The Queen of Denmark granted them a royal warrant of appointment. It is a way for recognizing companies that have supplied the royal household with quality goods for long enough. If it is good enough for the queen, it is good enough for me. Regal quality-priced items make JYSK accessable for everyone.
Hygge is all about intention and a conscious desire to find warmth. I find that the first step to get there is to turn off all of your harsh overhead lighting. Candles are your new best friend. JYSK stock a very diverse selection of candle holders from the industrial to the dainty and pretty. And since it is Ramadan, you still need the quintessential lantern! Be sure to grab a few while you are there.
Having people over in Ramadan means that your home will probably be overflowing with visitors. Nothing will make them feel more welcome and comfortable like sitting down and finding themselves surrounded by softness. I believe that the proper ratio of cushions to people should be two to one and during Ramadan, you can totally up that number. We’re tired, hungry and grumpy, so what better way to chill than to take a quick nap on the couch surrounded by fluffy goodness. The faux sheepskin ones are adorable and so soft. Or maybe grab a beanbag or two for ultimate sink-in-your-chair bliss.
Even better, get a sofa-bed! JYSK has some great choices. Make your guests feel welcome enough to just flip it open and sleep off that famous post-iftar food coma. They should be able to just grab the nearest throw, which are available at JYSK and come in different colors that will match any theme you might have inside your home.
A good host/hostess is a considerate one. Which is why you need side tables. You really don’t want people sitting around, while holding their plates or coffee cups. That is just stressful and not hygge or good Ramadan etiquette at all. Round tables, square tables, little tables, big tables. You will find one, or four, that suit your space and wallet.
While we are on the subject of tables, you might want to consider upgrading your dining room set. Tables in particular are sold separately so you can mix and match the chairs. Opt for an expandable table so you can accommodate all of your friends and family without having to have a huge table for everyday use.
After everyone has gone home and you are ready to find your own inner hygge, you will be glad that you got one of their mattresses and pillows. Their slogan is Scandinavian sleeping and living, and they are serious about the sleeping part. Engineered to give you support and comfort, the mattresses live up to that claim. Climbing into a warm bed after a long day and knowing that your bedsheets look as great as they feel makes it all worth it. And with Ramadan nights being really short, it will definitely be a worthy investment.
Their prices are so budget-friendly that you can stock up on everything without worrying about breaking the bank! We are sure you won’t walk out the door without filling a shopping cart or two. And you will definitely be back for more. They are all about choices that fit your every-day life!
We are so grateful for the Danes for giving us JYSK and hygge. But let’s not forget those Hyggebukser pants that you would not be caught dead wearing in public, but are so cozy and comfortable. They should totally be the Ramadan uniform so that we can stuff our faces and still be comfortable, all month long. Anything in the name of full happy souls and bellies.
