When it comes to enhancing Kuwait’s creative facet, there can be no better place than Bayt Lothan. In my recent visit during one of their events, the artistic hub proved to be a perfect station for talented folks to assemble, participate and share interests. The concert, titled ‘A Night In’ was an opportunity for upcoming musicians to redefine music in their original and unique style. These local artists performed on tunes altering between classical, western and jazz etc.
“All our musical events are an outlet for musicians that don’t have an opportunity to do what they really love. Play music. This concert is just one of the few themes that we (the creative team) liked and stuck with,” said Music Coordinator, Ayman Ali.
As a music lover, I was overwhelmed by these intriguing performances, which gave the audience an adrenaline rush. Each time a singer shared his/her ravishing lyrics, the crowd roared in applause and clapped, encouraging the young, up-coming star. Undoubtedly each of them was a star. With such a promising stage performance and passion for their dreams, it was undeniable.
“The musicians were all of whom either live, study or work in Kuwait,” said Ayman.
Their spirit and love for music was clearly reflected in the enthusiasm they portrayed throughout the show. It brought life into the event. Every musician, performing in-group or solo, delivered an excellent level of entertainment, and bewitched the listeners.
The audience seated a few meters away from the stage were delighted when the artists descended and approached them to join in. The mood was set, with dim blue lights and cushioned seats, adding to our ease. A total of 100-150 people, Kuwaitis and expats, were present at the venue to enjoy an evening of melody and rhythm.
“We do these events for our love of music and the arts in general. We are a venue, a place for music and culture to feel safe in a world that’s losing its sense of these things. Our goal at Bayt Lothan is to develop talent,” said Ayman.
He also informed that these guitarists, pianists and lyricists were auditioned before being selected. It was irrefutable that the committee involved in the decision-making had a keen sense for highlighting the country’s artistic gems. “The entry was open to anyone who wished to perform. The organization had been posting on our Facebook page and Instagram about the auditions,” added Ayman.
Apart from well-established native bands that participated, new ones were formed under the influence of this event. The Flamenco Duo, Avo Solakian and Abdul Qadir were a Bayt Lothan discovery and have played together ever since. Nasrin Zouhair, was yet another new discovery, who auditioned only a week before the event and was selected to make an appearance.
From a beautiful blend of Kuwaiti voices, to heartfelt folk music, a fresh new approach to jazz and blues, and a never-ending mixture of loud and soft music, this concert was an unforgettable one for me.
