How do you say happy birthday to a literal legend of its time? If you are anything like the folks over at Porsche Centre Kuwait, you do so with a combination of looking backwards nostalgically, and towards the future by debuting two new models. The event proved to be a fun one for all and proved why, fifty years after its initial debut, the 911 remains one of the best sports car brands in the world.
Porsche’s thrilling contradictions of innovation and tradition, performance and everyday usability, design and functionality played a starring role at their recent anniversary event. In a milestone year for the brand, the powerful 911 Turbo S made its debut appearance in the country, sharing the limelight with the 911 50th Anniversary Edition, also displayed in Kuwait for the first time.
Guests were taken on a visual journey through the evolution of the 911 since its debut year of 1963, accompanied with the special display of classic 911 cars from several generations – a rare opportunity for visitors to witness the legacy of the iconic 911. Virtually no other car in the world can look back on such a long tradition of continuity.
For five decades the model has been viewed as the ultimate automobile and quintessential sports car. In 1963, the first 911 was unveiled at the Frankfurt International Auto Show; ten years later the first ever Turbo prototype debuted at the very same event. Decades later, on the 40th anniversary of the 911 Turbo, Porsche Centre Kuwait has unveiled the new 911 Turbo S Coupe featuring more power than ever, but with improved efficiency attributes that are more desired by today’s increasingly savvy market.
Embodying the landmark celebrations is the special anniversary model based on the 911 Carrera S. This 911 50th Anniversary Edition is a coupé with a flat-six rear engine and rear wheel drive, just as the original was back in 1963. Featuring active sport suspension, efficient performance and a special body, the 911’s legacy of raising standards drives on. The model features the wide body, typically reserved for the all-wheel drive Carrera 4 models. This special edition is limited to 1963 cars globally, representing the year of the first ever 911 world premiere; there is little doubt that this will of course only increase their appeal to loyal collectors.
Mike Ellenthorpe, General Manager of the Porsche Centre Kuwait division of the Behbehani Motors Company, said: “Behbehani Motors Company sold the first Porsche vehicle ever in Kuwait, a Porsche 356 in 1956. Since that time they have celebrated the evolution of the brand and its vehicle line-up. The 50th anniversary of the 911 links to the long history of Porsche in the country and the passion people in Kuwait have for the brand.”
Sharing the same values of performance and heritage, the exclusive 911 50th Anniversary Edition includes features that have contributed to the 50-year success story of the brand’s icon. It is equipped with specially tuned Porsche Active Suspension Management to complement the increased track width and enhance the exceptional cornering dynamics of the 911. The sport exhaust system offers a matching emotional sound. Special 20-inch wheels are a visual tribute to the legendary “Fuchs” wheels and are finished in matte black paint with polished centers. Chrome trim strips on the front air inlets, the fins of the engine compartment grille and the panel between the rear lights, emphasize the distinctive appearance of this limited edition model.
The 911 50th Anniversary Edition sprints from zero to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds (4.3 with PDK) and can reach a top speed of 300 km/h (298 with PDK). The performance features largely correspond to the 911 Carrera S. So, if you are one of the many who have long cherished this brand and have just been waiting for the perfect chance to get into one, these models will likely be the most collectible of all of them for a good many years to come.
