We all learn the alphabet pretty early in life, and we all know that A is for apple and B is for ball, but did you know that A is also for ‘al abraaj’, which represents our water towers which are a national landmark, and also arfaj, “the national flower, which grows on a bush and without a rain shower”. We sure didn’t! Bibi Salem Al Sabah has written a book called the ABC’s of Kuwait and is a treasure, and an absolute must-have!
What we love about the book (well, what don’t we love about it!) is that the book shares little nuggets of information that you know, but also little nuggets of information you probably did not know, and that warm your heart when you read them. The book evokes feelings of nostalgia somehow, while still being contemporary. As you turn each page you are delighted by the beautiful illustrations by Nada Dalloul.
This book is a perfect piece for your coffee table, to sit and read and enjoy with friends – and also just to flick through on one of those days! After going through it, we feel more connected with Kuwait. Our favorites are R and W , but go read them yourselves and decide which letters, explanations and little pieces of history warm your heart the most.
This book is part of Bibi’s mission to celebrate all things Kuwait, she also has previously written other books, created stickers and designed cards to achieve her goal. We absolutely love how fun and lighthearted this book is – it also makes the perfect gift!
