This year, one of our favorite Japanese robatayaki restaurants, Roka, celebrates two decades of culinary excellence in the UK, tracing its roots back to the iconic Charlotte Street location in London. Roka has become synonymous with the art of ‘robatayaki’ cuisine, and its Kuwait branch is joining the global festivities by reintroducing some of its most beloved dishes over the last two decades. We are so excited to try some of the culinary delights that are being fired up!
At the heart of Roka’s gastronomic experience lies the central robata, where the ancient Japanese method of ‘robatayaki’ comes to life. Diners have the unique opportunity to witness the preparation and cooking of dishes over an open coal flame which is always such a treat. It brings an authentic touch to the dining experience.
Co-founder of Azumi Ltd and creator of the Roka concept, Rainer Becker, who conceptualized Roka during his time in Tokyo, expressed his passion for the complexity of Japanese cuisine. “Twenty years on, our menus remain authentic to the Roka story. We aim to strike a balance with the clean Japanese cooking techniques that piqued my early interest – beautiful fresh sashimi, and of course, robata grilled meats. After two decades of experimentation, our dishes truly reflect what our customers keep returning for,” he explains.
The Roka journey began in 2004 at Charlotte Street in London, but the success resulted in an expansion in London and beyond. In celebration of this milestone of the inaugural Roka restaurant globally, Roka Kuwait is bringing back 20 iconic dishes that have graced its menus over the past two decades. These limited-time specials will be rotated seasonally, launching in January and continuing throughout April, July, and October. At present, the culinary journey in Kuwait introduces an array of mouthwatering delights, including the Scallop Tataki with white asparagus and yuzu dressing, Grilled Corn with spicy smoked butter and shiso, Konbu Smoked Duck Breast with ginger miso and kumquats, Rice Hot Pot with king crab and wasabi tobiko, and the lush Yoghurt and Almond Cake with mango toffee and miso caramel ice cream.
