This Earth Day, April 22nd, the Save Soil movement will launch the #PoweredBySoil campaign under the global Earth Day theme “Our Planet, Our Power.” The initiative highlights the critical link between healthy soil and the food we eat, urging global action against the escalating soil crisis.
With the UN projecting that 90% of global topsoil could be degraded by 2050, threatening food security, Save Soil is emphasizing the urgent need for soil restoration.
At the recent UNCCD COP16 conference in Riyadh, Save Soil, alongside 4per1000, presented a key policy brief, backed by 60 NGOS from across the globe. The brief called on the UNCCD to expand support for farmers worldwide to restore land and soil health, stressing the profitability of preventing further degradation and the need for funding regenerative practices.
Save Soil is a partner initiative with the Riyadh Action Agenda, launched at COP16 to accelerate land restoration and drought resilience. The movement was launched by renowned Indian Yogi Sadhguru, who travelled through 27 countries in 100 days on a motorcycle to raise mass visibility for the soil crisis.
The #PoweredBySoil campaign invites everyone to share photos of their meals on social media using the hashtag #PoweredBySoil. This simple act celebrates the nourishment and culture derived from healthy soil and raises awareness about its vital role.
Campaign Objectives:
● Highlight soil’s role in food security and planetary health.
● Engage a global audience in celebrating our connection to soil.
● Direct Earth Day’s focus towards soil conservation and restoration.
Join Save Soil this Earth Day. Share your meal photo with #PoweredBySoil and be part of the movement for healthy soil and a nourished future.
“Maintaining healthy soil with adequate organic matter – ideally 3-6% – is not just an environmental issue; it’s fundamental to preventing forced migration,” says Praveena Sridhar, CTO of Save Soil. “When soil loses its vitality, communities lose their resilience to drought, crop yields plummet, and people are left with no choice but to move. This report underscores the urgent need to see healthy and living soils as the solution for the nexus of problems that humanity faces through mass migration, climate change, land degradation and food security.”
Save Soil is a global people’s movement launched by Conscious Planet to address an existential crisis – the rapid degradation of agricultural soils. Over the last three decades, Save Soil has implemented a holistic strategy for soil revitalization through scalable farmer-driven projects, policy advocacy, and citizen awareness campaigns. The movement is working with a number of governments across the globe to shape soil policies and is supporting over 250,000 farmers in India to transition to various other regenerative agricultural practices including tree-based agriculture (often referred to as agroforestry).
Save Soil is backed by the UN Environment Program, UN Food and Agricultural Organization, UN Convention to Combat Desertification, World Food Program, and IUCN amongst others.
