Kuwait’s food options might seem endless and are loveable, but sometimes – especially for those of us who’ve spent time living in the good old US of A – we need our Southern comfort food. What better than a meal consisting of homemade fried chicken, mac and cheese, biscuits and mash to fill that void? Buddies Ahmad Al Najadah and Nasser Ayad, both former long-time residents of the Dirty South (Virginia and Florida), along with a dearly departed friend, felt the same way upon their collective return to Kuwait when they discovered a niche in the local market dedicated to everyone’s favorite delicacy: homemade fried chicken. Inspired by their love for comfort food and in honor of their departed friend, Ahmad and Nasser took it upon themselves to fill this strategic gap with the birth of their homegrown concept.
“Fried chicken here is sold by franchises in mass volume, or is usually offered as a dish in an American restaurant. We wanted to do something different by offering a place dedicated to homemade, slow cooked fried chicken—done the way we like it—like we used to eat growing up.” So they researched, explored and pondered, and thus the local delivery-only concept was born, run by two down-to-earth guys with a lot of heart and excellent culinary taste. With an emphasis on home made, everything on Southern Fried Homicide’s menu is made from scratch by Ahmad and Nasser themselves. By sourcing local ingredients to create what they call “Killer Good Eatin’” (and trust us, it is), the outcome is food filled love and a lot of soul – guaranteed to knock you out after ingestion.
What to expect from their menu, other than sleepiness? It’s simple, yet authentic and indulgent. Their main attraction is obviously fried chicken, and if you’re looking for another type of protein, walk away because you aren’t going to find it at SFH. They repeat with vehemence that they’re focusing on fried chicken, perfecting it, and feeding it to the masses – “We’re firm believers that small is beautiful – you don’t have to make everything to please everyone. Fried chicken is what we want to be known for.” And known for it they will be, as their chicken is arguably the best many have ever tasted.
Keeping it classic is key with their menu. When ordering, you have the option of bone-in fried chicken combos, or boneless fried chicken in the form of a sandwich- be it regular sized or as a trio of best-selling sliders – their mutual personal favorite item on the menu. The fried chicken is perfection, with an expertly seasoned golden crust encasing a tender piece of premium local chicken. In sandwich form, the pounded out filet is wedged between a pillow-soft potato bun, stained with a faint hint of greasy goodness.
Accompaniments to expect when eating SFH’s fried chicken are classic crumbly biscuits paired with their homemade Autumn Butter, a sweet pairing to the pastry described by a fellow bazaarite as “butter pretending to be bread”. Another show stopper is their Mac and Cheese— so legit, we have no words— baked with cheesy, buttery, creamy goodness, this is the ultimate side to experience.
The mashed potatoes, contained surprising slivers of skin left in – something any southern mama would be proud of. Pair this creamy, melt-on-the-tongue-upon-taste goodnes with their corn-infused gravy – so thick and decadent, it could zap five pounds on anyone’s hips just by looking at it – but the taste is well worth it.
Southern Fried Homicide is truly an original concept that is sure to go places. From its tongue in cheek theme and humor, (as shown in the menu replacing common “Entrees, Family Meals and Extras” with “Misdemeanors, Felonies and Infractions”) to its brilliantly seasoned, perfectly cooked fried chicken – this one is sure to be a hit in Kuwait’s books. Though it remains to be a delivery-only concept, SFH is confident in its prospective expansion as a dine-in joint. But give them time, as they’re doing it all themselves – from the cooking, to the branding, and even the delivery. After all, they’re just two local guys who come home from their day jobs to feed Kuwait with their love of killer fried chicken!
