Skin cancer is in the top 3 of most common cancer types amongst young people and most of them are not aware of that! Research showed that people in the younger age categories check their skin least of all, while early detection can be crucial. This was the main motivation for the organizer and melanoma patient Marije Kruis (35) to start this global online campaign in which she asks people to rebel against skin cancer for a day.
In 2015 Get Out Blog – which is based in Kuwait and founded by Nour AlKawass supported Spot the Dot (as a media partner) during their exhibition and mural painting in Vienna, Austria, because they felt drawn to the fun and urban approach to reach out to young people about a rather serious topic.
On September 28, Not Necessarily Famous or NNF Agency will bring Marije Kruis, the founder of Spot the Dot, a melanoma patient from the Netherlands to tell her story and give a talk on her experiences with skin cancer as well as the story of Spot the Dot foundation at Be.Cafe (Rimal Resort). The event will end on September 28, but the exhibits will stay up till 9pm on Saturday, September 29.
Spot the Dot will bring 2 artworks with them to exhibit in Kuwait, these artworks will be accompanied by the works and performances of 15 local artists alongside 2 from the Middle East and 1 from Germany such as Omar Dhaferi (Kuwait) – Mohammed Kinderi (Kuwait) – Noor Ebrahim (Kuwait) – Rassil Haidar (Lebanon) – Yara Hindawi (Jordan) – Hisham Mohammed (Kuwait) – Ghaneema Al Qudmani (Kuwait) – Abrar Allahou (Kuwait) – Aziz Mutawa (Kuwait) – Abdulrahman Al Hamli (Kuwait) – Amro Adnan (Kuwait) – Mohammed Mayya (Kuwait) – Peter Moris (Kuwait) – Jehan Muraish (Kuwait)Phyllis Josefine (Germany). The event will be curated by Not Necessarily Famous – Agency.
The artworks will be exhibited and sold during the event. All proceeds will go to Spot the Dot and will be used to raise skin cancer awareness.
There are many misconceptions about skin cancer, especially amongst a young audience. Spot the Dot founder Marije wrote this blog about some of these misunderstandings. One of these misconceptions is that skin cancer only happens to pale and nordic people, however skin cancer does not discriminate and is a topic which is relevant all over the world and not the least in sunny Kuwait.
Public Awareness
This is a public awareness campaign to raise skin cancer awareness around the globe. The motivation for this campaign is born out of the many misconceptions and myths around skin cancer. Spot the Dot lets artists have their own approach to this story to visually inspire people to take better care of their skin and get a regular skin check. The artworks will be exhibited and sold during the event. All proceeds will go to Spot the Dot and will be used to raise skin cancer awareness.
International support
Dermatologist Ana Cristina Laureano, MD from New York says: “Spot the Dot is awesome! Those involved utilize a unique and artistic approach to inform and educate the public on skin cancer awareness. Remember, early detection is vital… so get your skin checked today!” But also she gets support from more offbeat people such as tattoo artists, musicians, street artists and world famous stunt driver Travis Pastrana (known for his Nitro Circus TV show on MTV).
