Back in November 2011 bazaar introduced our readers to Starnes&Shah, a vocal duo comprised of Zilpha Starnes (keyboards and vocals) and Dania Abu-Shaheen (guitar and vocals). The group was formed in Astoria NY in 2005. Shah (Dania) writes the music and Starnes (Zilpha) sings the harmony. The music ranges from paired down acoustic ditties to rock anthems, complete with choral arrangements and layered guitar effects.
The indie folk-rock duo recently released a new single from their upcoming album Shilling for Dreamtown. The new song, titled “24 Million” is a clear demonstration of the band’s ability to keep vocal harmony at the forefront of their sound as they continue to evolve from an acoustic duo to a full group rocking out with brightly layered guitars, quirky and infectious synths, and a groovy rhythm section. The song is full of positivity and looking ahead and you can’t help but share the sentiment as the ladies of Starnes&Shah sing this soaring anthem of forgiveness, new found possibility, and the triumph of overcoming pain. By the end of the tune you’ll be singing along gleefully and remembering that struggle and triumph are constants in our lives, and the rhythm of the two – our ups and downs – makes it all so exciting. So wherever you are, here’s hoping 2013 brings you personal victories whatever your struggles may be. Crank up this tune, sing along, and remember: it will all be OK!
