Porsche completes its debut season of all-electric racing as one of the best new coming teams. After a season which began in Saudi Arabia last November before pausing following the fifth round in February due to COVID-19, the ABB FIA Formula E Championship resumed for an intense nine days of racing at the historic Berlin Tempelhof airport to wrap up the final six rounds from August 5 to 13.
For the TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team’s debut season competing in the world’s first all-electric road racing series, it overcame adversity to finish eighth with 79 points, making it the most successful debut in the past five seasons of the championship, while drivers André Lotterer and Neel Jani claimed eighth and 20th places respectively in the Drivers’ Championship. Vice President Porsche Motorsport, Fritz Enzinger said the learning curve was steep but already has his sights set on 2021: “The last Berlin race represented the conclusion of what was in many ways, an extraordinary season in the ABB FIA Formula E Championship. We have celebrated our debut in fully-electric motor racing and achieved success from the get go.
“We scored points with the TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team in eight out of 11 events which is an outstanding record for a newcomer to Formula E. I am incredibly proud of the whole team at the racetrack and in Weissach. Huge thanks to the drivers Neel Jani and André Lotterer, as well as our partners.”
Formula E is the most competitive environment for driving the development of high-performance electric vehicles and the TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team is in good company with no fewer than 12 teams and 10 manufacturers taking part in the 2019/2020 season.
German driver, André Lotterer matched his season-best finish in Saudi Arabia when he piloted his Porsche 99X Electric to another second place in Round Six, while teammate Neel Jani from Switzerland enjoyed his season-best qualifying position of third in the tenth round which helped him to a career-best finish of sixth in the same race. The ABB FIA Formula E Championship will provisionally start its 2021 season on January 16 in Santiago, Chile with a return to Saudi Arabia’s Diriyah’s circuit on February 26 and 27 for the third and fourth rounds.
