Brought to you by the community theatre team at Staged in Kuwait, Wizard of Oz – The Panto promises to start off the holidays on the right note, allowing for a huge amount of interactive fun and laughs for families of all ages!
Annual Pantomimes are a British tradition that date back to the late nineteenth century. The tradition was brought to Kuwait by British oil workers who first performed the genre at Kuwait Little Theatre in 1953. Since then, pantomimes have been showering the stages annually with talented actors, outrageous costumes, magnificent sets and fun for the whole family.
“Panto” for short, a pantomime is a magical form of entertainment that takes a fairy-story and incorporates drama, music, dance, physical comedy and audience participation. It is a piece of theatre that interactively engages the audience and promises a fun night of live theatre for ages four to ninety-four.
This year the traditional British panto is based on the L. Frank Baum story of The Wizard of Oz. When a tornado rips through Kansas, Dorothy and her dog, Toto, are whisked away in their house to the magical land of Oz. They follow the Yellow Brick Road toward the Emerald City to meet the Wizard. En-route they meet a Scarecrow that needs a brain, a Tin Man missing a heart, and a Cowardly Lion who wants courage but must defeat the Wicked Witch of the West to earn their stripes. Will they succeed? You’ll have to travel somewhere over the rainbow, and along the yellow brick road to find out!
Staged in Kuwait’s Artistic Director, Tim Waddell, who helms the local production team made up of passionate theatre volunteers, commented, “Following the success of Dick Whittington last year, we are excited to be off on another panto journey this December all the way to Oz. We have a fantastic team of local volunteers all working around the clock to make sure that this year’s show is as bold, vibrant and fun as ever and we can’t wait to share it with you!”
Staged in Kuwait has just celebrated its tenth anniversary and Wizard of Oz – The Panto will be the group’s tenth pantomime having only missed the annual event in 2020 due to the pandemic. This year there will be 8 performances from December 1st to 10th in the beautiful theatre at the Gulf British Academy, Salmiya.
