The way our lives changed instantly last March was quite unforeseeable. We always thought that the things we did everyday were always going to be there. And while we miss a lot of the big things like seeing family and friends, we find ourselves yearning for the trivialities of everyday life.
Here are some of the things that we appreciated but never really thought were special until they were gone:
Instagram Fodder
If we didn’t love creating content, we wouldn’t be in this business, and finding things that are visually interesting in Kuwait just comes with the territory. Finding interesting street art, old cars and things on the ground helped us see how big and wonderful the world around us really is. Besides, you can only really take pictures of your coffee mug so many times until your feed becomes mind-numbingly boring.
Walking to work
We acknowledge that being able to walk to work in this day and age can actually be a privilege, but it is also a joy especially in the cooler months. It is how some of us can avoid going to the gym and call it exercise. The physical shift from office to home helped us feel like switching on and off, that just doesn’t happen with working from home.
Impulse snack buying
You can’t just pop into a cafe and buy a coffee or snacks anymore. We miss that more than we would care to admit. There is so much planning that needs to be done if you want a Latte or a shawarma. Slack channels are created. Checklists are made. It’s a beautiful process that we deeply miss.
Structure and routine
We miss spontaneity, but we also sorely miss the presence of structure in our days. It helps us look forward to the weekend, summer vacations and meeting friends. All of these things are gone anyway so maybe we should just let it go, but we can’t.
Trying on Clothes
We know you can virtually window shop, but touching fabrics and testing the fits is a different experience. But to be honest, we are not really sure we even want to try on clothes that might have been breathed on.
People watching
Just to be clear, we don’t mean staring at strangers and making them feel uncomfortable. For us it is just observing humanity going about its business. Noticing little kids toddling around at supermarkets, seeing teenagers trying so hard to be cool when they’re at the mall with their friends. We miss spending an afternoon at the Avenues and looking at people’s outfits and forecasting upcoming local trends.
Getting dressed
Some of us are still making an effort every morning to get dressed. But if you put on a cute outfit and no one gets to appreciate it, does it even count? It may seem trivial, but clothing is another form of self expression and we are being slowly stripped of all our venues and actions that help us navigate and curate who we are. We are feeling a little lost and frumpy in our PJs.
Grabbing Groceries
Remember when you ran out of milk and just popped into a supermarket. Without a worry you would touch five bottles to check the expiry date. Gone are the days when a quick supermarket day didn’t leave you wanting to pop a Xanax and take a nap and we miss them.
