Edition by Héctor Bellerín is a collection entirely made from more sustainably sourced materials that capture this season’s key men’s messages, mixing street with utilitarianism and oversized silhouettes, just like Bellerín’s own personal style. Every detail counts, from the sustainability of the materials to the authenticity of the design features, all made in close collaboration with Bellerín. Edition is the beginning of a brand-new chapter for directional men’s style at H&M.
Sustainability is at the heart of this project; Cottons are either organic or recycled from post- industrial waste, nylons and polyesters are 100% recycled and man-made fabrics like Evovero Viscose and Tencel are created from sustainable fibers. Bellerín asked for as many pieces as possible to be single fabric, to make recycling easier.
Oversized silhouettes dominate Edition by Héctor Bellerín, a look that gives both streetwear edge and a laid back feel for the new season. A lightweight parka, one of Bellerín’s favourite pieces, is cut in nylon, with a minimalist edge leaving only the details that matter: a hidden hood; tab-front neck fastening; concealed fastenings and drawstrings at the waist and hem.
The trend for matching sets is crucial to the collection. It’s a unified look that’s there in the unstructured beige blazer with a boxy shape, matching the wide-cut beige cropped pants. It’s also in the grey denim jean jacket, cut with drop shoulders, that matches the grey denim jeans, or the fluidity of one of Bellerín’s favorite looks: the Tencel navy resort shirt that matches with loose- cut Tencel joggers.
Fine-knit shirts and Tees have perfect springtime ease, while an oversize striped cotton-poplin shirt takes a traditional menswear classic and turns it casual. It’s one of Bellerín’s favorites, complete with oversize functional chest pockets. Jersey pieces are printed with graphics that encapsulate Bellerín’s sustainability beliefs, the hoodies and sweatshirts cut with drop shoulders and exaggerated ribs for streetwear authenticity.
We spoke to H&M’s spokesperson Ross Lydon, Head of Design for menswear, to find out more:
What is ‘Edition’ at H&M and what does this mean for H&M menswear collections moving forward?
Edition is the beginning of a brand-new chapter for directional men’s style at H&M. It is a true 100% sustainable collection at Menswear and strongly supports our vision to create a sustainable fashion future.
Collaborating with an athlete for the very first ‘edition’ collection is a bold move! Why was Héctor Bellerín chosen as the key collaborator for this new chapter?
Hector is a true ambassador for everything we stand for. He is not only a fashion icon but also an inspiration in the way he lives his life and what he believes in.
What was it like working with Héctor Bellerín? How involved was he in the collaboration process?
Héctor worked in close collaboration with the design team at every stage of the process. From the beginning, he worked on the look and attitude of the collection, sharing ideas on some of his favorite wardrobe pieces, as well as the sustainable commitment. As the collection evolved, he had input in graphics and print, as well as the colors and silhouette, right down to the styling of the pieces when all was finished.
What are the key pieces from the collection that make it in-tune with how men are dressing right now?
The eclectic mix of references throughout the collection, the juxtapositions between sartorial and casual.
What is your future vision for ‘Edition’ at H&M Menswear? How many collections will be released per year?
An Edition collection will be released each season, so twice a year. Each season the collection will conceptually highlight important trends and point of views. We might work with different collaborators for it, but know we focus on this first capsule collection with Hector.
The first collection, Edition by Héctor Bellerín, launching on kw.hm.com and in selected stores from February 18. Prices start from KD 5.5.
