If you didn’t already know, Maki has recently rebranded to a new design concept – and their iconic location in Burj Jasim is their second rollout of that concept. So, if you’re a fan of sushi, aesthetic interiors, and a minimalist experience but a maximalist when it comes to flavors, keep reading – you won’t be disappointed.
Maki’s new design concept is far more than just beautiful aesthetics, it’s a way of being. The design invites Maki fans to living with humility, be one with nature, and accept the full cycle of life, flaws and all. How does that relate to a restaurant, you may ask? Because Maki delivers a culinary experience that awakens all your senses.
Once we stepped into Maki, we instantly felt a little more at ease. The combination of neutral colors, soothing décor, and the lush greenery of the plants prepared us for the best part of the visit: The food.
We sipped on water as we chose from the rich variety of dishes, and decided to go for the Vegan Crispy Salad, Hana Truffle Sushi, Miso Truffle Sushi, the Golden Uni, the Crispy Olive Gunkan, and the Chocolate Bomb (yes, we came ready and hungry).
We started our meal with the OG Vegan Crispy Salad. This salad earns double points in our books for being vegan friendly. If you haven’t already tried this salad, you definitely should. It’s light, it’s a little spicy, and absolutely delicious. The kale, rocket, avocado, crispy harusame, wasabi and Maki’s special vegan sauce offers a mixture of fresh flavors, saporous sauce, and crunchy texture that got us ready and excited for what was to come. Before we finished, the waiters began to come with our main dishes (yay for quick service!) and we couldn’t wait to start digging in.
We started with Hana Truffle Sushi, it was a seafood lover’s dream combining rich, bluefin tuna, salmon, whitefish, and scallop. The result is an aesthetically pleasing, hunger satisfying showstopper. The best part? The sauce combining white truffle oil and aioli, it truly brought all the different flavors and textures together and created a delectable experience.
Next was Miso Truffle Sushi, though showcasing slightly similar components to the previous dish, the different sauce makes changes the entire flavor. The honey and sesame oil resulted in a fresher tasting dish, and all we could say about is: if you love sushi and enjoy a vibrant taste on the palate, you will love this.
Our third dish was the Golden Uni Maki, this dish was definitely a sight for sore eyes. As the waiter slowly lifted the smokey glass dome, he exposed eight beautifully decorated pieces of Maki in- and brace yourselves here- edible gold, giving you an effortlessly elevated experience. The mixture of sea urchin, fresh wasabi, salmon, and tempura flakes made our tastebuds sing!
As for the vegans, we have good news: Maki has a vegan menu! Other than the delicious Vegan Crispy Salad, we also tried the Crispy Olive Gunkan. The sweet potato, beetroot, green chilli, yuzu flakes, and caviaroli goodness wrapped in an olive and zaatar (yes, zaatar. You read the correctly) wrap resulted in an explosion of flavors mixing the best of Japanese and Mediterranean cuisines.
Just when we thought we were done, there came dessert: Maki’s glorious Chocolate Bomb. The chocolate mousse with vanilla ice-cream and hazelnut definitely hit the sweet spot, and this dessert is a sight to behold!
This Maki experience was no joke, so whether you’re a sushi-lover or not, we highly recommend paying Maki a visit this weekend. Come for the vibes, stay for the food, and go home with a happy, uplifted heart.
