Since its inception in 1989, DKNY (Donna Karan New York) has been known for its ability to produce chic classics with a crisp finish, ideal for the corporate fashionista on the go. DKNY is a well-known brand with pieces renouned for taking both men and women’s looks from daytime to nighttime in a matter of minutes – and their latest collection is no different!
Last year, NYC natives Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne were appointed Creative Directors of the long loved brand, putting a new twist on the collection that pays homage to both their hometown and Donna Karan’s classic style of corporate-chic. In doing so, they’ve created their pioneer collection inspired by their independent ‘Public School’ line. In their latest runway presentation, a quirky line of classics celebrates the flavors of New York City with straight angles and a polished finish mixed with a sense of urban cool that you can only achieve hailing a cab on the Lower East Side! These elements embody the Spring 2016 collection of DKNY, which we can’t wait to try on, but let’s take a closer look.
The line’s element for inspiration, the Power Suit, shows up as a predecessor for modern and unique styles creating classic staples with a twist, such as mini dresses. While the Power Suit also stands in its glorious true form, it is constructed and deconstructed through Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne’s vision.
This collection includes a line of gorgeous tulip-cut skirts with a sarong-like finish to bridge the gap between the classic corporate and fierce trends. Redefining the ‘80s and ‘90s Power Suit, gone are the days when women had to pair padded shouldered business blazers with A-line skirts, as this alternative would create a more modern and flattering silhouette. Pair with a classic pointed pump and you’re good to go! Other skirts on offer are asymmetrically hemmed, with a severe two-tone effect in the form of wraparound detail. The look results in a futuristic twist of business skirt-wear, and is a godsend to those who love to layer!
Other pieces that captured our attention include a form-fitting bodice accentuated at the waist to create an hourglass shape that will play up the curves. In an edgy pinstripe patterned fabric, you can’t go wrong! Other inspired styles include classic blazers in New York’s favorite shades: slate gray, white, and black. Gorgeous deconstructed blazer maxi-dresses and playsuits make an appearance as well.
And where would we be without the quintessential LBD? Be it little or long, this staple, also recreated from Donna Karan’s brand staples, appears in the Spring 2016 collection in the form of a sheer top layer to pair atop your favorite pieces to create a polished yet unique look.
This DKNY collection innovatively features what is sure to be a 2016 comeback favorite, the playful jumpsuit and conservative romper. Gone are the days of easy breezy Boho pieces that are made for weekend musical festivals, and rising are the days of crisp, clean and tailored suits that include long, midi and boxy short length pants. Each suit also features an individual detail that separates it from its sister styles – whether it be a belted effect, a buttoned breast design, pockets at front or on the side, each piece is truly unique and suited to fit the needs of an array of different body types. Let it be known, ladies, this year is all about baring a sliver of ankle – remember to wear those rolled cuffs with pride!
DKNY’s latest collection is just filled to the brim with brilliant styles, and it’s safe to say that fashionistas all over are looking forward to rocking Chow and Osborne’s urban vision – including the likes of Hannah Bronfman, New York City “It Girl” and entrepreneur: “It’s a style for the young boss-woman. And I’m a young boss-woman.” We all are, Hannah – we all are.
