The Radisson Blu Hotel has had an illustrious history of hospitality in Kuwait, starting with the vision in the mid-1970s, to marking 40 years this month.
It was the mid-1970s when the Marafie family decided to enter the hotel industry after seeing the enormous opportunities and development in Kuwait.
Finally on October 11, 1980, the Kuwait SAS Hotel opened its doors.
The grand opening of the 200 room hotel took place in the presence of His Royal Highness Prince Bertil of Sweden. The Mohamedi II, a custom-made dhow, specially commissioned for the hotel opening by Husain Marafie, sailed to Kuwait from Calicut in India and took its place at the hotel in 1982. It eventually became the renowned Al Boom restaurant.
The Radisson Blu Hotel has introduced many new concepts throughout the years.
The one that stands out is Peacock Chinese Restaurant that opened in 1983 and is a popular hub visited by families for generations.
The magnificent Al Hashemi II is recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest wooden dhow ever built. It opened in 2000 to widespread acclaim, just in time for the hotel’s 20th anniversary celebrations. The vessel is a symbol of Kuwait’s distinguished maritime heritage for future generations.
Ever since its opening, Radisson Blu Hotel, Kuwait, has become an integral part of Kuwaiti society and has witnessed many milestones throughout history.
“As we look back at those amazing 40 years of genuine hospitality, I would like to express my tremendous gratitude to all our staff, guests and business partners whose great support and loyalty down the years has helped to maintain the Radisson Blu Hotel, Kuwait’s reputation.” says Mr. Philippe Pellaud, the General Manager of Radisson Blu Hotel.
