As life returns to pre-covid pseudo normalcy, we are very excited to share some of the events that will be taking place at Dar Al-athar Al-islamiyyah. The cultural organization is renowned for their annual events calendar that is full of workshops, lectures, concerts, plays and markets. They are stellar curators of all things cultural and there’s so much more than we could fit here, but we picked some of the things we are most excited about this October.
Lecture: From Shakespeare to Southern Arabia

Founder of One World Actors Centre CIC (UK), Ms Alison Shan Price has lived in Kuwait for 37 years, producing and directing shows in English and Arabic. These have included acclaimed bilingual productions premiered at the Dar al Athar al Islamiyyah, with international premieres at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. In 2017, she was awarded an MBE by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth for her services to the Dramatic Arts in Kuwait and the Middle East. This lecture is the fifth in the series entitled The Middle East & Victoria’s Women. Alison wlll be giving a lecture titled “From Shakespeare to Southern Arabia”. During World War 2, in April 1943, Doreen Ingrams, key player in the establishment of the ten-year intertribal ‘Ingrams Peace’ in the Hadhramaut, accompanied the Hadhrami Bedouin Legion on their 500-mile trip, by camel, through the arid regions that bordered on the ancient Frankincense Route. Here she witnessed the devastating effects of the Great Famine of World War 2 and was determined to be of assistance. Later she would become a Founder Member of the Council for the Advancement of Arab-British Understanding CAABU and continue to produce and facilitate work of great cross-cultural importance to the end of her life.
Workshop: Pen and Ink

Hands on experience with Arabic calligraphy with Ali Abdulrahman Badah. Ali is a noted calligrapher with more than 45 years’ experience learning and teaching his gift. He studied with some of the region’s leading calligraphers, created commissioned work for the office of the Amir and others, and taught at the practice at every level. The DAI is honoured to have him sharing his talent and experience with us.
Music Night: “Breaking Barriers” performed by Dr. Hamid Al-Koot.

The musical concert titled Breaking Barriers contains original music composed by Dr. Hamid Al-Koot. The compositions have a Western music adaptation interwind with Blockbuster movies music. Through his composition, the composer is attempting to introduce new compositional ideas into Kuwaiti sounds while trying to bring the Kuwaiti music composition into international music standards. Thus, reaching the modern audience and keeping pace with current musical taste.
